WATCH: Mayweather-McGregor given its own song from The Killers
We’re five days away from the Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor pay-per-view showdown in Las Vegas, and the mega-money fight has been given its own official song.
Vegas’s most famous musical sons, The Killers, have released a track and an accompanying music video in association with the U.S. network that will air the fight, Showtime.
Titled ‘The Man,’ the music video features the alternative rock band performing in a boxing ring in the Nevada desert, intercut with shots of the two fighters.
Frontman Brandon Flowers said that “I think there’s a symbiotic relationship between using a song like ours and Las Vegas and a boxing arena. Business of boxing. It seemed to make sense.”
A big fan of boxing, Flowers said “I think we’re nostalgic about it you know. And it’s again going back to the roots of it in Las Vegas. My grandma used to work at the Golden Nugget and she met Muhammad Ali. She met all these characters throughout the years.”
“My dad used to work on the west side of Vegas and he worked at this grocery store and Sonny Liston came in and shook his hand. My dad still talks about how big Sonny Liston hands were. I think that we definitely have that romance… to me, there’s something romantic about boxing. No offense UFC people.”
In terms of the Mayweather-McGregor clash itself, Flowers added that “it sounds like an exciting movie in the 80s. It sounds like some movie, good premise. It’s exciting. It is surreal.”
It’s one of the odder ways of building a fight, but it’s a nice addition ahead of Saturday’s clash at the T-Mobile Arena.
