VOTE: Irish boxer shortlisted for major award

One of the brightest prospects in Irish boxing has been shortlisted for a major award as he steps up his campaign to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Today the shortlist for the 2017 Nissan Generation Next campaign were announced, with Dublin boxer Tony Browne being one of the 19 nominees.

Young talents from sport, business, and the arts have been singled out by Nissan, and a final list of 10 will be picked by means of a public vote.

This top ten will be provided with a branded car for the forthcoming year, helping to raise profile and ease financial constraints as they look to become the “leaders of tomorrow.”.

The St Michael’s Inchicore light heavyweight turned plenty of heads back in February at the Senior Elite Championships, where he was edged out in the final by Irish amateur boxing legend Joe Ward.

For Browne, an opportunity like this could help him kick on ahead of a big push in 2018.

The Dubliner explained to that “as everyone knows, funding for the IABA isn’t going through the best of times at the moment.”

“I plan on winning an Elite title next year, so things like this are really going to help me boost my career going forward.”

“Thanks a million to everyone who is voting for me, it’s really, really appreciated.”
