Title Hopeful Cathal Jennings relishing knockout threat as he eyes Ulster Hall statement
Cathal Jennings is determined to make the most of his statement chance at the Ulster Hall on Saturday,
The Bancroft Banger takes somewhat of a step up when he trades leather for the fifth time as a pro on the Unleashed card.
Standing across from him on the Conlan Sports card when the first bell chimes will be Matias Camano, an away fighter he’d be favourite to beat. However, the Argentine comes into the clash in knockout form, something the 2027 title hopeful seems to welcome.
Jennings has warned that he expects to hurt his opponent when they meet, believing his pressure, punch selection and boxing ability can prove decisive.
“He is decent; he has two KO wins in his last three, so he’ll be coming to cause an upset,” Jennings told Irish-boxing.com.
“But I just feel like I am going to get a dominant win. I also feel like I am going to hurt him. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll push the pace, pick my shots and try to put on a boxing masterclass.”
The Newry native had to wait to pass the five-fight milestone. The 31-year-old’s last fight was in February, and he saw a Summer showdown cancelled on the day of the weigh-in.
Rather than sulk, Jennings took the time to train and suggests he is feeling with the benefits of continuous camp life.
“I’m feeling good going into this fight. It’s been a long time coming. I didn’t get out on the last card,” he said.
“I have been flat to the mat training. I was away in Thailand and trained out there, got some good sparring. Then I came home and got eight weeks in here. So I have just been going from camp to camp.”
“I had to lick my wounds and keep her lit. Hopefully next year I get a title fight,” he said.
Addressing his title hopes, the IGB man set his sights on the 135lb division and a 2027 domestic shot.
“I wouldn’t mind a six-rounder and then a title in May or June. I am targeting 135lbs. I feel like that’s where I want to be challenging for belts,” he said.
“I am not targeting anyone in particular. Anyone that’s game at that weight, I am happy to fight. I don’t fear anyone at the weight. I think I’ll be a problem for anyone at the weight,” he added.
