Thomond Showdown canceled? Lee versus Saunders postponed?

Doubts about the massive Thomond Showdown Andy Lee vs Billy Joe Saunders card have surfaced today.

Rumours were rife last night and picked up this morning that the biggest fight event to come to Ireland since Steve Collins and Chris Eubank’s super middleweight World title fight was to be cancelled.

Nothing official has come from either Frank Warren or Adam Booth the shows promoters and Irish-boxing.com was informed today by some close to event that it was business as usual in terms of the purposed September 19 show.

However, the Sun’s Boxing writer Kevin Byrne has said their is a strong possibility the show could be pulled and the main event looks set to be postponed.

Lee will still put is WBO middleweight title on the line against Billy Joe Saunders, but the fight could now take place in London in October.

If the fight is indeed postponed and the under card cancelled it will be a massive blow for Irish-boxing. Outside of Belfast Ireland has been starved of massive fights nights. Fighters like Ciaran McVarnock, Spike O’Sullivan and Stephen Ormond had hoped to appear on the massive show and will also be gutted if the event falls through.

But no one will be more upset than Lee, who wasn’t shy about revealing defending a World title in his home town was always a massive dream of his.
