Some feared it was a case of Finnegan’s Wake ahead of Thomas Finnegan‘s debut.

The Tallaght puncher was ending a long ring absence against what appeared to be the Ivan Drago of journeymen, Alejandro Mostazo.

The debutant tired dramatically in the last round but had done enough quality work in the opening three to hold on and secure a debut win back in February, passing a big test in the process.

Promoters Red Corner are keen now keen to test the Dubliner in a different way, throwing him in with a journeyman spoiler.

While Santos Medrano [10(3)-55(11)-4] is nowhere near as physically daunting as Mostazo, indeed he was recently defeated by the hulking Spaniard, Red Corner chief Jonathan Graham believe he will ask questions of Finnegan, questions he expects his man to have the answers for.

“Thomas impressed everyone on his debut. Despite the apparent lack of fitness and his long ring absence at times he looked like he’d never been away,” Graham told Irish-Boxing.com.

“He’s fighting a rugged southpaw survivalist in Santos – it’s a different test for Thomas and important that he gets these type of fights out of the way now.”
