Sweeney confident of title glory

13 April 2010 – By Cormac Campbell

Mayo cruiserweight Michael Sweeney has told irish-boxing.com that he is champing at the bit ahead of his Irish title fight with Dubliner Ian Tims on May 15.

The Storm, 8-1-1 (5KO) is returning from disappointing stoppage defeat at the hands of Felipe Romero in Mexico in December. Sweeney was winning the bout comfortably before being stopped in the last round.

Im looking forward to this fight, he said.

I want to prove to people that my last loss was unlucky and Im back with a bang. I cant see this fight going past five rounds, Im in the best shape of my life.

Im training in Ricky Hattons gym in Manchester, so that brings me along well. Im running with Prince Arron the light-middle Prizefighter champion and Denton Vassell, who is fighting for Commonwealth title.

Despite moving up to cruiserweight for the title tilt, Sweeney is hoping to boil back down to light-heavyweight to take on the winner of the Jamie Power vs John Waldron Irish title fight which takes place on the same night.

My plan is to win the title then go back to my proper weigh light-heavy and fight the winner there, But first I have to take care of Tims first and then move on to bigger things. In 2010 and 2011 the Storm will make big noise.
