Interview Phillip Sutcliffe Jr pre any of his pro fights and he is as relaxed as the infectious Jono Carroll can be excited and that is saying something.
The Dublin light welterweight prospect claims he takes it all in his stride. He will admit to some form of butterflies in the few minutes he is weighing in, but after that he reverts to type and that cold, calm, confident look returns to his eyes.
Speaking on Thursday, however, the Crumlin native admitted not to being nervous but excited about the ‘big opportunity’ that presents itself on Saturday night.
“It’s a bit mad. I am here in Germany and I am excited. I usually get a buzz on weigh in day and that is it. That is the big day for me then I go back to being relaxed about it all,” Sutcliffe told Irish-boxing.com.
It speaks volumes as to how important this fight is for a fighter that has suffered plague like avoidance over recent years. Defeat European #2 Anthony Yigit and ‘Succo’ will be next in line for the European title.
Suctcliffe is aware this is a massive chance for him, but is also aware that getting the opportunity only counts if you take it.
“This is a big opportunity and I have to be aware of that, but I have to do my job and do it well.”
