It was a debut to remember for Steven Ward tonight in Belfast.

The Ulsterman made his pro bow at the Titanic Exhibition Centre on the Boxnation ‘Homecoming’ bill and scored an exciting points win to the delight of his fans

While his ring moniker may be ‘The Quiet Man,’ Ward’s fans certainly made themselves heard, roaring the roof off the venue following the final bell.

The man in the other corner was Bulgarian Merdjidin Yuseinov, and the game journeyman managed to get through a few hairy moments to force a scorecards decision.

Ward began confidently, throwing a full range of shots against the shelled-up Bulgarian.

The second saw the 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medalist indulge in a spot of switch-hitting in the second as he looked to penetrate the defence of Yuseinov.

Ward stepped it up in the third stanza, with the Oliver Harrison-trained fighterforcing his man to the ropes where he unloaded with vigour.

The 26 year old almost raised the roof in the final seconds of the final round,, badly stunning Yuseinov but just couldn’t find the knockout punch as the dazed Bulgarian held on.

The result in no doubt, Wad claimed a 40:36 win on the cards.

Ward’s brand new professional record starts off at 1(0)-0, while the shell-shocked Yuseinov now stands at 7(2)-17(8)-2.
