O’Rourke Targets American Showdown with Fryers

Ryan O’Rourke [9(1)-0] says his team are about to make Larry Fryers [11(4)-5(3)-1] an offer he hopes the Monaghan man doesn’t refuse.

The Dubliner finally made his Star Boxing and American debut in the spring of this year, defeating Faycal Rezkallah in Schenectady to increase his unbeaten start.

The 23-year-old now looks set to fight exclusively out of America. Indeed the ‘Silent Assassian’ is ready to start making some noise stateside and believes an all-Irish fight with an American circuit regular would be ideal in that regard, meaning they are targeting ‘Lethal Larry’.

“That’s a fight we have been looking at,” O’Rourke told Boxing Bants,

“Larry is a very good fighter, a tough fighter and a fighter I’d love to fight. If that fight came off that would be great,” he adds before suggesting an offer may be placed very soon.

“I haven’t [spoken to Larry] but I think my team are going to get in contact soon, so we will find out if that fight can go down. He’d be a good suitor seen as we are both Irish and we’re both on the American circuit, we are both eligible for the same titles, so it would make perfect sense for that to happen.”

Fryers is scheduled to fight in Philadelphia in October, so any fight would not be until the end of the year. The Monaghan man has fought exclusively stateside and is popular in New York in particular. The 32-year-old has taken riskier fights of late and tried to cause some big upset against the likes of Xandar Zayas, John Bauaza, Samuel Teah and Wesely Ferrer on big shows. That has meant he’s been busy but hasn’t won since 2019. Still, the fighter, who had agreed to fight Ray Moylette twice, would represent a huge step up for O’Rourke and would fancy his chances in that clash.
