Mullingar Shuffler’s Martin Nevin Claims European U17 Bronze After Three-Fight Run!
Mullingar Boxing Club has another European medal in Martin Nevin to celebrate after Nevin secured bronze at the European U17 Championships, adding to the club’s growing reputation for developing young boxing talent.
Martin battled his way onto the podium after an impressive run through the tournament, overcoming opponents from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova before his campaign came to an end against a highly rated Azerbaijani boxer.
The Irish youngster began his medal-winning run with a victory over his Ukrainian opponent in the last 32 before facing a stern test against Georgia in the last 16.
Trailing heading into the final round, Martin needed a big finish to keep his championship hopes alive. He responded in spectacular fashion, scoring two standing eight counts against the Georgian boxer to turn the contest around and secure his place in the quarter-finals.
Victory over Moldova in the last eight guaranteed Martin a European bronze medal, capping off three demanding contests against international opposition.
His tournament eventually came to an end against Azerbaijan, with the gruelling nature of his previous bouts taking its toll. However, his performances throughout the championship underlined his ability to compete at the highest level of age-group boxing.
The achievement marks another significant milestone for Mullingar Shuffler Boxing Club, with Martin’s bronze becoming the club’s second European U17 medal in less than three years.
The club has also captured 11 national titles in a relatively short period, highlighting the impressive work being carried out in developing the next generation of Irish boxing talent.
For Martin’s father, the medal carries an added sense of pride. Having competed himself, he revealed that his son has now achieved something he never managed during his own underage career by bringing home a European medal.
The family will now hope that Martin can continue progressing through the amateur ranks, with ambitions of one day following in his father’s footsteps by winning a major elite-level title.
His father believes the youngster has the attributes to go even further, pointing to his natural style and punching power as qualities that could potentially translate into the professional ranks in the future.
For now, however, Martin can take enormous pride in a European bronze medal earned through determination, resilience and three hard-fought victories on the international stage.
With another European medal secured for Mullingar Shuffler Boxing Club, the achievement provides further encouragement for a club continuing to make its mark on Irish amateur boxing.
