Kerry featherweight Moira McElligott booked her place in the European Championshps quarter finals this afternoon with a brilliant win in Bulgaria.

The St Michael’s Athy woman took on Croat Sara Beram in the Last 16 in Bulgaria, her opening bout, and scored a unanimous decision victory in Sofia.

Fighting in just her third international contest, McElligott grabbed her first international win, taking every round against the Balkan to put herself just one win away from a medal.

Following a scrappy first, the Asdee fighter began to close down Beram in the second and found the target with some nice long shots.

The pace set by29 yearold McElligott seemed to be too much for Beram, and the third round was dominated by the Irishwoman who chased down her tiring opponent.

The Croatian came out wildly in the final round, but the cool head of McElligott soon took over and she closed out an impressive unanimous triumph (40:36 x3).

The Irishwoman now fights for a medal on Sunday
