Mixed fortunes for Ireland in World Championships

There was mixed fortunes for Ireland in the opening day of the World Championships in Doha this evening.

Two of the three boxers in action progressed to the next round with relative ease while one exited on a split decision.

Belfast’s Brendan Irvine got Ireland off to a winning start claiming a unanimous points win over Nico Hernandez of the USA.

The teen dominated the fight and looked in control throughout as he won without being overly tested.

Irvine will now fight Turkey’s Muhammet Unlu in the last 16 on Thursday.

Michael O’Reilly also had his hand raised this afternoon thanks to a 3-0 win over Ukrainian Valerii Kharlamov in the 75kg middleweight division

However, there was no  joy for Irish light welterweight champion Dean Walsh who lost on a split decision (29-28,28-29,28-29) to Venezula’s Luis Arcon Diaz.
