MEDAL ALERT: Bronze in the bag for brilliant Broadhurst

Amy Broadhurst has guaranteed Ireland’s second medal at the European Under-22 Championships in Romania.

The Dealgan lightweight won her quarter final in Targa Jiu this afternoon to secure a bronze at the very least.

Having received a bye to the last eight, Broadhurst defeated Turk Esra Yildiz on a unanimous decision in a heavy hitting encounter. The Louth 21-year-old bloodied her come-forward opponent’s nose in the final round and boxed well at range to secure a repeat victory having defeated the same for in the quarters of the European Youths in 2014.

The win will see Broadhurst join middleweight Aoife O’Rourke, who received a bye to the semis, on the podium at the end of the week.

The medal, whatever colour it ends up being, will be Broadhurst’s fourth at European level having won European Youth and Junior gold as well as an additional Youth silver. The recent Irish Elite runner-up also has an EU Youth gold.

Ireland’s other boxer in action today, Mayo light flyweight Shannon Sweeney, lost in her quarter-final, being defeated by top Bulgarian fighter Mari-Emi Todorova.

Galway middleweight Gabriel Dossen will box for bronze tomorrow to try and ensure a third medal for Ireland’s nine-person team.
