McKenna secures August 3rd fight date
‘The Hitman’ will be looking for his third victim on August 3rd.
Stevie McKenna, older brother of Golden Boy prospect Aaron, has secured a third fight date.
The Sheer Sports-managed lightweight debuted as recently as April, but is being kept busy and fights for the third time in four months in California in just over a weeks time.
The 22-year-old fights a yet to be confirmed opponent at the Hawaiin Gardens as part of the Boxing and MMA ‘Fight Night’ series.
The Monaghan native took his time in following his younger brother into the pro ranks, but seems to be making up for lost time.
He debuted against Trey Branch with a first round stoppage win in April and followed it up by taking the short route to victory against 21 year old Keasen Freeman.
No doubt McKenna will look to keep the streak going come August 3rd and, according to BoxRec, he could have four fights to his name before the next month is done as he is slated in for an additional August 30 appearance.
The fight will also be McKenna’s first under three-time Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia.
Welterweight Aaron and lightweight Stevie have been based in Santa Monica, California for the past two years as they look to transisition to the pros, training under South African Courage Tshabalala and their father, Fergal.
This team will stay together but have teamed up with Garcia at his famous gym in Oxnard, California.
The Mexican-American has trained a total of 12 fighters to world title honours – including four-weight champs Nonito Donaire and Mikey Garcia, his younger brother, as well as two-time Floyd Mayweather opponent Marcos Maidana.
Garcia boasts a busy gym currently including the aforementioned Mikey, top prospect Vergil Ortiz, and WBC light welter champ Jose Ramirez.
