McGuigan: Nonsense has to end and Conlan has to be given British title shot

JAMIE Conlan has been knocking on the door of a British title fight for so long that Promoter Barry McGuigan is going to go knocking on the door of the British Boxing Board of Control to ensure he gets a deserved tilt.

Conlan has been over looked for over a year despite the fact holds number one contender status. The Belfast super flyweight even had to stand bye and watch as champion Paul Butler moved up to bantamweight to challenge for world title but didn’t vacate.

Now Butler has a world title at another weight the belt should be made available and McGuigan is adamant Conlan should be afforded the chance to fight for the strap on September 6.

The Irish boxing legend and Cyclone Promotions CEO wants the ‘nonsense’ to end and he will fight the WBO European champions corner and push the board to sanction a domestic dust up.

Speaking after Conlan’s impressive and successful defence against Gabor Molnar McGugain said.

“Jamie is knocking on the door for a British title. We are going to get the fight for him and make sure the British Board listen to us. Because it is nonsense we are not accepting it anymore. He is in line for a British title fight and we are going to push for September 6. We have a fight in mind and now it is just down to the board.”

“You can’t do much more than what Jamie has done to date. He is now 12-0 and he has been number one contender for over a year. It is just not good enough for them to not to accept him for a British title fight.”
