Macklin to fight at light middleweight in Birmingham on October 17

Three time World middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin will drop to light middleweight for an October 17 Birmingham clash.

Macklin is moving down to Light Middleweight for the clash with fellow Brummie Jason Welborn on the undercard of former Irish champion Frankie Gavin’s clash with Sam Egglinton a week after Andy Lee defends his WBO middleweight title against Billy Joe Saunders.

It’s a second fight in quick succession for the World-rated 33 year old as he warms up for the bout with a fight in Spain next weekend.

Macklin believes he will be in contention for a World title shot in the New Year and stressed he is open to challenge at either light middle or middleweight.

However, the October 17 move does indicate that Matchroom and Eddie Hearn foresee the possibility a 154lbs title shot arising in 2016.

Welborn shouldn’t cause the former Irish, British and European champion much trouble but comes into the bout full of confidence having climbed off the canvas to beat Ryan Aston in their meeting for the Midlands Area Light Middleweight crown in June.
