Jono Carroll to fight English opponent in August

Jono Carroll [18(4)-1(0)-1] will keep busy this summer in a fight with a two time British title challenger.

Irish-boxing.com previously revealed ‘King Kong’ would take on Maxi Hughes [20(4) -5(2)-1] at some point this summer – and MTK Global confirmed as much today.

Carroll will top the first of three MTK shows on Tuesday 11 August behind closed doors at the LS-LIVE in Wakefield.

Hughes is a solid enough fight for the recent world title challenger when you take the pandemic into account.

No doubt the southpaw would have hoped to build on his dominant destruction of former world champion Scott Quigg with an upgraded opponent.

Indeed, he would have been looking for a clash that would enable him to take a significant step toward a second world tilt.

The current climate and behind closed doors nature of shows hampered those plans – and Hughes is certainly in the next best thing bracket.

The Yorkshire southpaw has lost five times in his 27 fight career, but the all those defeats have come in title fights and against known names.

Former Anthony Cacace and James Tennyson foe Martin J Ward has two wins and a draw against ‘Maximus’, Sam Bowen, who Cacace beat to become British champ, also defeated him, as did Golden Contract finalist and Tyrone McCullagh defeater Liam Walsh and Scott Cardle earlier in his career.

The 30-year-old will be most remembered by Irish fight fans for defeating James Fryers in the Europa Hotel back in 2016.

Hughes’ name will also be familiar from being confirmed as a Gary Cully opponent earlier this year.

The entertainer has recently called out Carl Frampton and has been called out by John Joe Nevin, but Hughes is the next step on the road to a second world title shot.
