Gary Sweeney set for return to the ring

Gary Sweeney [4(4)-0] is finally back to full fitness, training, and is set to return to the ring in the coming weeks.

The Connacht cruiserweight endured a nightmare 2017 and 2018 where he was restricted to just one fight due to a painful abscess on his coccyx.

However, that issue has been resolved following surgery in October and Sweeney, who is still just 24, is back in training ahead of a return.

‘The Gallant’ has relocated to Liverpool for his pro restart, training with Derry Mathews and George Vaughan and looks set to box on an MTK bill in the city on Friday April 19th at the Olympian.

The European Youth silver medallist and Elite Senior champion turned pro as far back as 2016, racking up three straight knockouts.

His back issue would flair up afterwards, limiting him to just one fight but the Ballinrobe boxer is ready for a fresh start.

The Irish cruiserweight scene is an increasingly busy one, with Tommy McCarthy returning to activity, Steve Collins Jr returning to the division, while prospects Conor Cooke and Johnny Corcoran rise.
