Gary Sweeney secures new fight date as he awaits surgery
Ballinrobe cruiserweight Gary Sweeney spent a full year out of the ring until his return last month, but ‘The Gallant’ will not have to wait too long until his next fight.
Sweeney [4(4)-0] has had his first fight date of 2018 confirmed and will fight on the MTK London ‘High Stakes’ bill at the Brentwood Leisure Centre on Saturday March 3rd.
It’s a second successive fight at the venue for the 23 year old following his first round stoppage over Imantas Davidaitis, and the card will once again be streamed live and free online via YouTube channel IFL TV.
Sweeney has easily cut through all his pro opposition thus far and will be looking to make a step up in 2018, however he still has long-standing injury problems to resolve – namely an abscess on his coccyx.
“I just want to be kept busy,” said the European Youth silver medalist.
“I’ve no opponents in mind just yet, I’ll be happy to be kept busy and whoever they throw in front of me I’ll try to knock out.”
“It’s great to get back out so fast and hopefully after this I’ll be able to build on it and build my record.”
“I was meant to have an operation, but the proper surgery has been delayed until later this year. They’ve drained it [the abscess], so that’s improved it and I’m able to train and fight.”
An opponent for Sweeney will be announced in the near future.
The card in just over eight weeks time will be headlined by Southern Area light middleweight champion Matt McCarthy and will also feature Larry Ekundayo, Dan Azeez, and Tey Lynn Jones, with many more still to be announced.
