Former Irish champion fights tonight on big New York MMA card


Tomorrow night in Las Vegas, Conor McGregor makes his professional debut having made the move across from mixed martial arts.

The Crumlin light middleweight faces five-weight champ Floyd Mayweather in an unprecedented event at the T-Mobile Arena. However, ‘The Notorious’ is not the only code-hopper.

In a few hours time, five-time Irish Elite Senior champion and European quarter finalist Sinéad Kavanagh will have her sixth professional mixed martial arts fight.

The former Drimnagh middleweight (165lbs) made the switch to MMA a few years ago and won an World Amateur Championships silver medal – with the winner later being stripped for doping violations.

Training out of the famous Straight Blast Gym, the Inchicore woman has racked up a 4-1 record as a featherweight (145lbs) in the pros, fighting exclusively on big cards in Ireland.

Having begun on the BAMMA promotion, she has had her last two fights on Bellator cards, the second largest promotion behind the UFC. Tonight she has her first fight outside of Ireland, featuring on Bellator 182 in the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York.

Here, ‘KO’ Kavanagh faces another former boxer in Aussie Arlene Blencowe.

Angerfist’ had a 2(0)-3(0) record in pro boxing, winning minor titles at welterweight (147lbs) and challenging for the Australian lightweight (135lbs) title. The southpaw has moved since moved into MMA where she has a 9-6 record and the 34 year old would be considered a slight favourite tonight.
