European Youths day 2 results and Friday’s fixtures
Dean Clancy progressed to the last 16 of the European Youth Championships at the expense of Maskim Pamkou of Belarus in Italy today.
The Irish flyweight claimed two 10-8 scores in the second round en route to a unanimous decision victory in Roseto degli Abruzzi.
Big performance from the Sligo orthodox who worked well behind his jab and regularly found the target with big backhands, particularly at the start of the second when a massive delivery sent his opponent’s gum shield flying out of his mouth.
Edward Barrett, meanwhile, looked composed and focussed in the first two rounds in his win over Israel’s Ahmad Abdun Abu, the Galway light-heavy landing a wide array of shots to the head and body throughout before Abu went for broke in the third.
Barrett will now meet England’s Karol Itauma in an all southpaw battle for at least bronze on Saturday.
Cork lightweight Alex Higgins appeared to be on his way to victory after taking the first round 10-9 across the board, but Serbia’s Bojan Timotijevic battled back to take the second 4-1 and the third 5-0 in a close tussle in the 60kg lass.
Daina Moorehouse and Dearbhla Rooney, pictured below with Irish staff after their wins this evening, were between the ropes almost simultaneously in rings A and B and hammered out unanimous decisions in the light-fly and feather classes over the Ukraine and Poland.
Moorehouse, snapping home some wicked left hooks, earned at least one 10-8 score versus Jvanisova Olena and Rooney’s simple, but very effective, two-punch combinations saw her advance with a bit to spare versus Weronikia Pawlak.
“All five boxers performed exceptionally well and they can be proud of their performances,” said Peter O’Donnell who is Irish team manager in Italy with Fiona Hennigan. “You couldn’t ask anymore of them and the two girls gave master classes in boxing.”
Six Irish boxers are now through to the last-eight and are within striking distance of the medals. Five of their compatriots will be aiming to join them in the quarter-finals from Friday’s last 16 bouts.
