Duddy primed for Chavez battle
32 June 2010 – By Jonny Stapleton
Derrys John Duddy claims he hasnt been distracted by World title talk and is fully focused on his next fight and defeating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Duddy faces the undefeated Mexican in Texas on June 26 on the top of Top Ranks Latin Fury 15 bill in the knowledge victory will ensure him a shot at WBC middleweight strap.
However, despite having the coveted World title carrot dangled in front of him, the all action former Irish amateur champion is not looking beyond Chavez.
I’ve had big fights before, Duddy told the Irish Mirror.
I am trying to make sure I dont treat this one any different. I’m working hard to get the job done and give all my fans something the cheer about. I’m living my dream. Being involved in big fights is every fighters goal.
I am not looking toward the World title fight yet. The Chavez fight is big enough. Just look at all the interest in it. I need to win this fight like I did my fights in the past. This is another chance to step closer to fighting for the title but I am focused on getting the job done first.
If Duddy is to win the much hyped World title eliminator he will have to be at his barnstorming and all action best. Texas is Chavezs, who is currently sparring Dubliner Dean Byrne, second home. Mexican support will certainly outnumber Irish encouragement and Duddy is planning a big performance to counter act any crowd advantage.
I do need to win big I am aware of that. Fighting Chavez in San Antonio, Texas is as good as fighting him in Mexico. He gets a massive support down there and it will be like a home fixture for him. But I have to fight smart too. I’m working on winning. I don’t care what way it comes.
Everything is going well in the gym. I am just training as hard as usual. The weather here is getting nice and warm too. Training in this heat will ensure I will be well ready for San Antonio.”
