1995: Ballymena’s Eamonn Loughran stopped Tony Gannarelli of Scottsdale, Arizona, in the sixth round to defend his WBO welterweight title at the Ulster Hall in Belfast. Loughran downed the American in the sixth with an overwhelming barrage before the fight was halted with Gannarelli failing to answer a sustained volley of shots from the Irishman.

1994: Lightweight Martin Renaghan and light welter Mark Winters won their semi finals to guarantee bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.

Armagh’s Renaghan outpointed Papua New Guinea’s Henry Kungsi (16:5) and Welshman Gareth Lawrence (22:14) before winning in the last four against Pakistani boxer Arshad Hussain (20:11). In the final Renaghan lost (11:18) to home fighter and three-time Olympian Michael Strange.

Antrim’s Winters whitewashed Issy Kamakuju of Nambia (13:0) and defeated South African Stephanus Carr (19:6) before a semi final win over New Zealand’s Trevor Shailer (11:7). In the decider he was narrowly overcome by Englishman Peter Richardson (17:20).
