Controversial semi final defeat for Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor’s hopes of becoming the first woman to win six successive amateur World championships went up in smoke today.

The Olympic Gold medal winner suffered a split decision reverse to former foe from France Estelle Mossely in Estana this afternoon.

Taylor, who suffered fair but surprise defeat to lose her massive wining streak in the Olympic qualifiers earlier this year, had secured a place on the plan to Rio and the Olympics with a quarter final victory on Tuesday.

However, her hopes of an unprecedented sixth successive fell by the wayside today.

The Bray puncher won the first round, but Mossely fought back and took the second stanza.

The third round was a close one pipped by Taylor, leaving it all to fight for going into the last.

The Irish puncher and ground breaking star seemed stronger in the final round, with many feeling she had done enough to win, but the judges awarded the victory to Mossely in a split decision
