Casey gets Irish off to winning start

Limerick Flyweight Myles Casey made history this morning by becoming the winner of the first ever bout at the inaugural European Games. The Saint Francis’s BC fighter earned a unanimous decision victory (29-28 x3) over his Belarussian opponent, Ivan Fihurenka.

Finding himself level on all three scorecards heading into the final round, the southpaw conjured up a brilliant final stanza to secure a memorable victory. This win is all the more impressive considering that it was the 21 year old’s first ever fight in a major international championships.

The younger brother to former Prizefighter and European Champion, Willie Casey, will now be looking to progress further in his maiden international tournament – less than a year after bursting onto the scene last Winter when he won three national titles (under 22, intermediate, and elite)

The Soutill man will now face local favourite Elvin Mamishzada in the Round of 16 on Saturday(10:15 Irish time).
