Burnett: Hearn’s World title plan has me pinching myself in disbelief

According to Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn, Ryan Burnett is just three fights away from a World title shot next Spring in his home city of Belfast.

The young bantamweight has the first of these three fights at the end of the month at the First Direct Arena, and admits that he somewhat shocked with this fast-track to the top.

The 24 year old told IFL TV that “I sorta have to pinch myself.”

“I was just sitting there listening at the press conference and I heard Josh Warrington go ‘yeah we’ve got Ryan Burnett on the bill who is closing in on a World title shot’ and I though wow, it seems a bit mad.”

Nevertheless, the Adam Booth-trained fighter is delighted with the progression, and noted how “I’m happy to be mentioned among the names of Stuart Hall, an amazing fighter, and Lee Haskins, an amazing fighter.”

“I am really happy with the way things are going at the minute – but it is up to me to keep my head down and work hard.”

With Carl Frampton’s impending U.S. stardom, huge boxing shows are becoming infrequent in the Titanic City, but Burnett believes he can be the man to lead a resurgence alongside the likes of rising cruiserweight star Tommy McCarthy

Burnett explained how “you’ve got a whole handful of great fighters, and it will work well when Eddie brings the Sky cameras back to Belfast.”

“I will be the man to headline shows back in Belfast, definitely. It is what I want and I think now have a great team behind me in Eddie Hearn – who knows the game inside out, knows exactly what he’s doing and I’ve also got Adam Booth – who has been there and done it with David Haye.”
