Brandon McCarthy beaten in World Youth Championships

Brandon McCarthy bowed out of the World Youth Championships this morning in Budapest.

The bantamweight was unanimously defeated in the Round of 32 by Indian Akish Kumar in the Hungarian capital, Ireland’s third loss from three fighters.

Following narrow split-decision defeats yesterday for Dearbhla Rooney and Dean Clancy, the St Michael’s Athy youngster was not able to get Ireland on the board on Day Two.

McCarthy began well and showed some quality flashes but, as is becoming a pattern in amateur boxing, the work of the more aggressive and busier fighter was rewarded

Up on three of the five cards after a round, the Irish teen, who is still a Youth next year, was outgunned in the second and the third.

The stylish McCarthy began well, counter-punching to great effect and – bar one long overhand right that sent him momentarily into the ropes – controlled the entirety of the opener.

It was a scrappier second and Kumar was having more success with long, clipping shots. The quality punches were still coming from McCarthy but the activity and pressure of the Asian.

The Kilkenny slickster was dragged into a dogfight in the third and while he popped off one-twos and nice counter right hooks, the heavy punching Kumar was not to be denied

Ireland have one more fighter in action today with European Youth and Junior gold medallist Daina Moorehouse starting her campaign in the light flyweight Last 16. The Bray talent boxes Spaniard Marta Lopez whom she defeated in the European quarters earlier this year.
