No boxing coach for Conor McGregor ahead of Mayweather debut

Conor McGregor will make his professional debut in the most bizarre circumstances on August 26th.

The Dublin light middleweight faces Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, and striking coach Owen Roddy has revealed that ‘The Notorious’ hasn’t, as of yet, employed an actual boxing trainer ahead of his potentially record breaking bout.

The two-weight UFC champion and former Crumlin amateur, who has been in camp for over a month now, has a further nine weeks to prepare for the undefeated five division boxing World champ, but has yet to add a sweet science expert to his team.

There was talk that Paschal Collins would be approached, fellow Dublin trainer Phil Sutcliffe, who coached McGregor as an amateur, was also mooted as a possible adviser and Michael Conlan revealed he will be in and around the camp but not as a coach.

However, speaking to Ariel Helwani on this week’s edition of The MMA Hour, McGregor’s long-time striking coach Roddy explained that McGregor will just keep with his SBG team ahead of the boxing bout.

“At the moment, it’s going to be me, John [Kavanagh], possibly Artem [Lobov] and… I think there’s four.. he’ll have to get his own cutman. He hasn’t sorted that just yet.

“We’re not bringing anyone in as of yet Who knows down the line? Things can change. If we feel we need to bring in some people, we may bring in some people.”

“We’re gonna head over the states in the next couple of weeks. But at the moment, we’re in Dublin, we’re all working together.

“It will definitely be myself, John and Artem at the moment.”
