Cool as you like – The Iceman takes debut in his stride
Keane McMahon lived up to his ‘Iceman’ ring moniker both in and out of the ring on Saturday night.
McMahon was one of a number of debutants to impress and was coolness personified in the ring during his first paid outing.
The 22 year old showed a little bit of everything as he registered a shut out points win over the much heavier Lukasz Kuc and took his debut in his stride.
Speaking after the clash he was equally relaxed and had an ‘it is what it is’ mantra, just happy to get win one out of the way.
“I was happy with that. He was very very tough. He came in heavy aswell, he was seven kilos heavier so when you take that into account it was a good performance, I think anyway.”
“He was tough as nails. I hurt him in the third round, the left hook to the body, I should have doubled it like my coaches said, but it is what it is. Now it’s back to the gym to work on some things.”
McMahon has already worked on adapting his style to suit the pro game. On Saturday he did show counter punch capabilities and used a stiff jab, but he also displayed seek and destroy qualities.
“Anyone that watched me in the amateurs would say I am a counter puncher, but I have been working on other things in the gym and I was practicing all those tonight. It paid off.”
“My last competitive fight was November 2015 in the Intermediates, so the rounds were good. When I look back on it now I would have liked to get him out of there, but the rounds were valuable.”
McMahon brought one of the bigger supports from the 15 fighters on ‘Celtic Clash 2’ duty. They were certainly vocal and partisan, but while he was delighted to have done so many tickets and grateful for the support, he claims he didn’t hear them when he was in the ring.
“The crowd was brilliant. To be honest I didn’t hear them. All I heard was the corner calling for the double left hook!”
