Game Plan of Thrones for Commonwealth challenger Jamie Conlan
Not quite Game of Thrones, but Jamie Conlan finds himself going into his clash with a concrete game plan for the first time as he bids to claim the Commonwealth super flyweight title in the Copper Box on Saturday.
The Belfast World title hopeful admits he went in with the mindset of doing what he can do and producing his best to win previous fights.
However, this time rather than seeing the ‘TBA’ tag on Boxrec in the build up to his bout the WBO title holder has nine weeks knowing who will populate the opposite corner and has prepared accordingly.
The World title hopeful has had time to reflect with coach Danny Vaughan as well as brother Micheal Conlan and father John as to how to best approach a clash with the unbeaten Anthony Nelson.
As a result he thinks the best every Jamie Conlan will be on display on Boxnation on Saturday.
“On Saturday, fans can expect the best Jamie Conlan thereās ever been. Normally when you start camp youāve just got a date with opponent āTBAā. This time weāve had nine weeks to focus on building a game plan solely catered to Anthony Nelson, focussing on exploiting his positives and negatives. Now itās up to me to execute on Saturday night,” He told Gylnn Evans.
Conlan is hoping to impress on Saturday and while he has World aspirations he knows the prestige the Commonwealth title is held in and he is keen to buckle the rainbow belt around his waist.
“Commonwealth belt has a certain prestige and has been held by some fabulous champions. Locally, guys like Marty Rogan and Eamonn Magee had it. My brother won the Commonwealth Games two years ago, so the pressures on!,” he added before discussing his opponent.
“Firstly, Iāve 110% respect for Anthony. Itās the first time Iāve met a defending champion with something to lose. That makes it far harder than challenging for a vacant title. Iāll not be able to scrape a points win, Iāll have to wretch the belt from him, probably stop him.
Heās a very aggressive fighter with a high workrate, good engine. His record suggests heās not a āblow outā puncher but sources tell me heās ābody strongā and bullies opponents. I believe heās a brickie by trade, so a natural tough guy. This is his big TV fight. Iām expecting the best Anthony Nelson of his career.”
