‘I’m more angry than I’ve ever been’ – Paddy Donovan issues world title warning
Paddy Donovan insists he has never been hungrier to become a world champion – admitting he is ‘angry’ he hasn’t got a belt around his waist yet.
‘The Real Deal’ has had one failed world title attempt and is still very much in the world title picture, considering he is mandatory for Liam Paro‘s IBF strap.
However, the fact he feels his defeat to Lewis Crocker in the first-ever all-Irish world title fight was unfair aswell as the fact Australian Paro will make him bide his time before fulfilling his mandatory duties, has left him disgruntled.
The 27-year-old, who faces Tyrone McKenna in an interesting domestic on the Katie Taylor undercard early next month, is using that upset to fuel his world title push.
“I feel more angry than I’ve ever been in my career, actually,” Donovan said when speaking to Irish-boxing.com.
“I’ve got a different bite to me, a bit more hunger than I ever had, really. Especially the way my career has gone the last couple of years. I feel like now is the year.”
The southpaw stylist doesn’t just feel he is world title material; the Andy Lee-trained talent believes he is the best doing it in his weight class at present.
“I should be a world champion right now, but I’m not,” he declared.
“But I am going to become a world champion. I believe that I am the best welterweight on the planet. It’s as simple as that.”
Before he can turn that belief into reality, however, Donovan must first deal with McKenna in front of a huge Croke Park crowd on September 5.
And he sees the fight as another important step towards the world title he believes is destined to be his.
“This is the year that I become a world champion and I have to beat Tyrone McKenna to make that happen.
“I’m primed and I’m hungry. My desire is to become a world champion and move on to fight the best welterweights in the world with the belts.”
