‘I think he’ll beat Gervonta Davis NOW’ – Johnny Nelson backs James Tennyson’s Tank stopping power

A tank might just be beyond his limit, but James Tennyson has the power to stop the ‘Tank’ Gervonta Davis, according to Sky pundit Johnny Nelson.

The former Brendan Ingle-trained cruiserweight turned Sky name went as far as to say the 27-year-old would be beat the elite level operator right now.

Nelson was speaking after ‘The Assassin’ made it six straight knockout wins since moving up to lightweight, stopping WBA top 10 ranked Josh O’Reilly within a round.

It was another destructive display by the Tony Dunlop-coached power puncher and one that left Nelson suitably impressed.

Nelson said: “With that punch power, I think – it might not go down too well – I think he’ll beat Gervonta Davis now.

“I’m telling you, the power that young man’s got, the hunger he’s got.

“Listen, give the boy a chance. I’m telling you now, put him in with Davis.

“We’ve just seen number ten knock out the WBA number eight, okay it’s about levels.

“So at that level, now you’re talking about fighters that can punch, that can fight.

“He just made easy work of number eight so to me he’s a world title contender.

“With that kind of power, I back my words every day.”

Speaking after the fight promoter Eddie Hearn was more cautious and revealed the plan was to take a world level fight before flirting with many of the elite operators at lightweight.

Davis was last seen in the ring sensationally stopping former Carl Frampton foe Leo Santa Cruz , is a four time world champion and has stopped all but one of his pro foes.

Hearn would prefer to see him in with Jorge Linares in Belfast next, Nelson, who upset Irish fight fans post Tommy McCarthy’s recent European title win, believes he is ready for a much bigger challenge.
