Munster double for Taylor- World #1 beats Queen Underwood
Katie Taylor secured a Munster double in Kerry tonight.
The World No. 1 beat America’s Queen Underwood on a Tralee BC hosted promotion at the Brandon Hotel.
The Bray woman earned a unanimous decision after four competitive rounds with the ex Pan American champion.
Seattle-native Underwood started the bout aggressively on the front foot, but Taylor had a very good second round and was on top in frames three and four in Tralee.
Tonight’s fight was a repeat of the 2010 World Elite lightweight semi-final which Taylor won en route to gold in Barbados.
The decision arrived 24 hours after the Olympic champion convincingly beat Serbia’s Jelina Jelic on a Kanturk BC hosted show at the Mallow GAA Complex in Cork.
The Kerry rematch could be Underwood’s last outing in the amateur ranks as she has indicated that she is about to switch codes.
Eleven other bouts, featuring some of Ireland’s and Munster’s top young prospects, were decided in the Kingdom this evening.
AIBA 3-Star R&J John Casey, who refereed last night’s Taylor versus Jelic clash in his native Cork, was the third person in the ring for the Taylor versus Underwood bout.
