Sensational Carroll settles massive Dublin grudge in style

Jono Carroll settled one of the biggest and possibly most notorious Irish boxing grudges in sensational fashion tonight.

Carroll rematched Declan Geraghty in a repeat of the 2014 Irish Fight of the Year on the undercard of Michael Conlan’s Homecoming and it was a case of repeat rather than revenge.

However, while the result was the same the manner in which it was achieved was very different.

‘King Kong’ went into beast mode against his old foe and was pressure from start to finish eventually forcing the referee to step in and save an exhausted and brave ‘Pretty Boy’ on his feet.

It wasn’t quite a win for will over skill as Carroll, who was slight underdog going into the clash, performed well, but it was a beat down from the relentless Dub.

The victory was massive for Carroll’s career – with rumours of a big fight now around the corner – and pride the manner in which the Dublin derby was won was spectacular and will prove a launch pad for a fighter with a ranking title and a #7 world ranking.

Geraghty to his credit showed flashes of quality and great heart, but from round five of the fight the former National Elite Champion was out on his feet because his long standing rival has taken the wind out of his stylish sails.

Carroll possibly shaded the first two rounds, but moved it up a gear in the third, forcing the man he shared a world record number of verbal spars with to touch down.

A highly entertaining round set a new tone and seemed to take a lot out of EU silver medalist, whose attempts to fight back transported fans back four years and to the first encounter.

The bloodied and bearded fighter survived a positive start to round four by the former Crumlin amateur and took over completely from then.

It was constant punching and relentless pressure from a fighter who predicted a stoppage win in a controversial build up which eventually paid dividend by round eight.
