Tommy McCarthy – “It was just a bad night at the office”

He is that laid back it’s hard to tell how Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-1(0)] is feeling at the best of times.

One thing for sure though, is he isn’t feeling sorry for himself after his British title final eliminator reverse to Matty Askin last month.

McCarthy hit the canvas for the first time ever, lost his unbeaten record, and the chance to challenge for the British title after a points defeat to the English champion in Manchester.

It slows momentum somewhat for the Belfast favourite, and while he was upset and frustrated to lose, he takes solace in the fact there are other title avenues open to him, with a Commonwealth charge now looking likely.

‘The Mac Attack’ is also content that he lost to the better man on the night, but not the better fighter, and believes he would defeat Askin if they were to meet again.

“I started back training again last week. I don’t think losing that fight will put me back too far because I know that I’m better than Matty Askin,” McCarthy told the Irish News

“If I fought him again I’d beat him but that night everything that could go wrong went wrong for – it was just a bad night at the office. It was a case of me boxing badly and him boxing well.”
