Quigley wins gold
15 March 2009 – Press Release
Donegal welterweight Jason Quigley finished on top of the 69Kg podium in Lithuania today following a commanding win over Deimantas Mickevicus.
The Finn Valley boxer convincingly beat the Lithuanian 14-1 to claim gold at the Danas Pozniakas Olympic Youth tournament in Vilnius.
Quigley, the current Irish Under 21 and Intermediate champion, registered 53 points in his four wins in Lithuania and conceded just seven.
Ireland will be taking home one gold and three bronze medals from the tournament, one of the most competitive underage box-offs in the world.
Bernard Roe, Charlie Haggerty and Gary Molloy all finished in podiums positions. Haggerty was desperately unlucky to lose out by one point to Krystan Sielwa of Poland in Saturdays lightweight semi final.
The Irish squad return home tomorrow.
