9 February 2009 – By Cormac Campbell

Irish Olympic bronze medallist Paddy Barnes has spoken of his excitement ahead of his appearance on the undercard of Bernard Dunnes WBA super-bantamweight title challenge against Ricardo Cordoba.

The March 21 event promises to be one of the groundbreaking variety with Irelands best amateurs sharing a bill with professional stars and speaking to irish-boxing.com Belfastman Barnes said he cannot wait.

“To fight in front of 9,500 people will be incredible, he beamed.

“I think fighting in bigger venues in front of bigger crowds will really spur me on. Fighting at the O2 will be an incredible experience.

Right now I dont know who Ill be fighting but Id assume it will be an international opponent maybe the English champion or even the European champion.

Despite appearing on a professional card, Barnes reiterated that he will remain an amateur boxer.

It will give me a taste of what the professional scene is like, but Im staying amateur.

Theres the two majors for me the Worlds and the Commonwealths. Id like to think I can get a medal at the Worlds. Thats the ambition for the next year.
