Vladimir Nikitin’s face has been left in such a mess by Micheal Conlan that the Russian can not fight in tomorrow’s scheduled semi final according to reports online tonight.
The Russian, who farcically got the decision over the Belfast fighter in a more than controversial quarterfinal, was set to face Shakur Stevenson in tomorrows bantamweight semi-final
However, StiffJab are quoting Wexford man and former head of the High Performance Unit, Billy Walsh as saying the Russian has pulled out of the semi final because Conlan ‘left his face in a mess’.
The AIBA have since said they have yet to get conformation of Nikitin’s withdrawal from Team Russia, but considering the cut he suffered during his fight against Chatchai Butdee, which was subsequently worsened by Conlan, his withdrawal is quite plausible.
There is an element of insult to injury about the news, Conlan ridiculously doesn’t get the win, but leaves his opponent in such a bad state he virtually has to pull out of the Games.
