Debut Delight- John Cooney victorious in Spain.

John Cooney (1-0) passed his first test tonight in the professional ranks, the Dub southpaw defeated former Victor Rabei opponent Cristian Abata (0-3) in his professional debut on an Irish packed card in Alicante, Spain via unanimous decision.

Trained by Stephen O’Rourke, Cooney started strong and landed some punishing body shots in the first round against his active opponent, these body shots remained a constant during the fight.

Cooney looked strong and built for his weight and during an interview with Irish-Boxing.Com earlier this week, he outlined his plans for dominance at his chosen division of Super-Lightweight. “My long term goal is too become number one at my weight class and then move up and be the best there is.”

Promoted by Slater Sports Consultancy, the 24 year old turned over but was unable to make his debut for awhile due to the lockdowns caused by COVID-19 that brought boxing and the world to a standstill.

Just happy to get a fight date, Cooney seized the opportunity and established himself as one to watch out for at 140 pounds.
