Ireland Roasting In Turkey: Sheehan ensure perfect day

Tipperary’s Con Sheehan completed a perfect day for Ireland at the European Championships following his win over Levan Guledani of Gerogia in Ankara, Turkey today.

The Clonmel BC heavyweight was 14-12 up in the third and final round when Guledani was retired with a hand injury.

Earlier today, John Joe Nevin, Cathal McMonagle and Willie McLaughlin claimed victories to make it five wins from five in the last 24-hours for the nine-man Irish squad.

Donegal welterweight McLaughlin beat 12-8 Stephen Banyo of Holland over three, three minute rounds to set up Sunday’s last 16 duel with Borna Katalinic of Croatia.

McMonagle claimed a countback win over Mane Marceta of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the super-heavyweight class in Turkey.

The Holy Trinity Belfast club-man had his hand raised in victory on accepted scores (75-74) following a 15-15 tie in Ankara.

McMonagle will now meet England’s Anthony Joshua in the last 16 on Monday. Cavan BC bantamweight John Joe Nevin – following Ray Moylette’s win yesterday – made it two wins in a row for Ireland this morning.

He’ll now meet Nikoloz Izoria of Georgia on Monday.
