Frampton will have to ask for Conlan fight suggests Top Rank President
While a potential clash with two-weight World champion Carl Frampton is still a long way down the line, Top Rank feel a Belfast super-fight between ‘The Jackal’ and Mick Conlan is a realistic eventual option.
2015 World Amateur Champion Conlan is due to make his professional bow on St Patrick’s Day at Madison Square Garden, at super bantamweigtht, and looks likely to be fast-tracked. The Olympic bronze medalist has previously stated his desire to eventually face WBA featherweight champion Frampton later in his career and it is a sentiment shared by his promoters
Top Rank President Todd deBouf said that “anything is possible, anything is realistic. I hope he [Conlan] jumps onto the scene and all of his sudden his ability is there to be seen and his transition from amateur to pro is seamless, which it will.”
“But look we have to get this one over and down with. This is his pro debut and it’s a lot of pressure. Let’s give him a little time to feel his way and get some confidence going.”
DuBoef however stated, in no uncertain terms, that Frampton would have to come to them rather than vice-versa. The step-son of Top Rank CEO Bob Arum explained that “if Frampton is around, it would be a terrific fight to do. Absolutely terrific, but one thing I will say, and I say it all the time so I don’t mean to demean Frampton, but our philosophy is we don’t chase the money we create the money. So I am not going to chase Frampton. I don’t bring opponents to the table I create business and I am going to create a business around Michael Conlan and we will see how it goes, but I am not going to chase a guy.”
“Mayweather, De la Hoya, Pacquiao, Ali. we created brands around these guys and people came to the table.”
