Cavan light middleweight turns professional

A new fighter has joined the Irish pro ranks and is set to debut in the coming months.

For the first time since EU lightweight champion Andy Murray, county Cavan will have representation in the professional game, with Shercock light middleweight Owen Duffy making the move from the amateurs.

Duffy, who turned 24 last week, boxed amateur out of the McMahon’s gym in Carrickmacross in neighbouring Monaghan.

A quick southpaw, Duffy won the 2014 Irish Novice Championships, beating current BUI Celtic welterweight champion and upcoming Irish light middleweight title challenger Jay Byrne in the final.

Following this, the Ulsterman would go on to top the podium at the prestigious Ringside World Championships multi-nations in America.

Moving into the pros, Duffy already has a debut date set and will make his bow on Saturday March 24th.

He will feature on the Boxing Ireland Promotions and Tony Davitt ‘Celtic Clash 5’ card at Good Counsel GAA club in Drimnagh, Dublin.

Duffy joins Stephen McAfee, Martin Quinn, and Niall O’Connor on the card, with four more fighters still to be announced.
