European Bronze for Desmond who loses semi final in Sofia
Cork’s Christina Desmond saw her European Championships journey come to an end this evening.
The Fr Horgan’s middleweight had guaranteed bronze in Bulgaria on Sunday, but could not upgrade to silver as she was beaten by Frenchwoman Maily Nicar.
The Rebelette southpaw began strong in Sofia, ramming home the backhand left with much success. The rangey Gaul Nicar would grow into the bout as it wore on however and, as Desmond tired late on, she would claim victory on the scorecards.
The loss today draws an end to Ireland’s participation at the tournament, and the team leave with Desmond’s medal. The Leesider became Ireland’s third ever medalist at the championships following Clare Grace and Katie Taylor.
