Boy 4 and Youth Semi Finals

Galway dynamo Francis Cleary got one of the biggest cheers of the day entering the ring to face Ned O’Reilly in one of the opening bouts of today’s Boy 4 semi-finals.

 
And the Olympic BC prospect didn’t leave his fans down, producing a power-packed performance to secure a safe passage to the 39Kg final.

 
Scoring almost exclusively with his left in the opening two rounds, Cleary earned a 15-6 win against an opponent who landed some neat shots of his own.

 
Cleary will now meet Stephen McKenna next Friday after the Smithboro BC prospect impressed with one of the biggest wins of the day.

 
Kieran Lally, who had Joe Hennigan in his corner, Thomas Maughan, Jamie Conroy, Cork’s Luke O’Shea, Bernard Ward, Ryan Green, Michael Nevin and Conor Bianconi also registered wins this afternoon.

 
Martin Stokes, meantime, have seven points to spare over Casey Berry at the end of their 46Kg duel.

 
Stokes was joined in next weekend’s finals by his Mulhuddart team-mate Karl Lynch, who posted a 9-5 decision over Galway’s Jason Ward.

 
There were mixed fortunes for Leesiders Patrick Doherty and Pa McDonagh, Doherty progressing at the expense of Shane O’Neill, but McDonagh, who had Michael Carruth’s former coach Nicholas Cruz in his corner, losing out to Kalum McConville, while Conor Martin beat Conor Burns.

 
Galway’s James Cleary staged one of the comebacks of the tournament to deny the talented Conor Burns. Trailing 7-3 at the end of the second, Cleary, from the Olympic BC, pulled out all the stops to earn an 11-8 verdict in a thrilling conclusion to a top class flyweight contest.

 

Meanwhile, the featherweight final will be between Aidan Walsh and Michael McGrane after both boxers posted hard-fought wins.

 
Michael Delaney completed a great afternoon for the Olympic BC, while Craig Bonney, Martin Maughan, Limerick ace Terry Harris, Lewis Crocker and Sean Conroy also won.

 
Daniel Keating out pointed Adam O’Donnell in a Cork versus Limerick 63Kg clash. Paddy Joyce chalked up a fine 13-2 verdict over Padraig Malone, and Jonathan Ward had a two point margin of victory over Clare’s Kevin Sexton.

 
Ballinrobe BC middleweight Matthew Burke squeezed out a 9-8 decision over Edward Mills, while Cormac Long, Gary Ward and Darragh Darcy all registered inside the distance victories.

 
Chris McCloskey and Mikey Walsh progressed at the expense of Stephen Love and Stephen Joyce.

 
In tonight’s Youth 1 semi-finals, Jason McKay and St Francis BC stand out Dom Sarsfield progressed with wins over Emmet McGinn and Thomas Ward.

 
Three bouts were decided on countbacks, John G Ward, Cole McGuinness and Michael Sweeney winning by way of accepted scores.

 
The Youth 2 and Boy (4) 54Kg semi-finals will be decided next Friday, March 9th (7pm).

 
The Boy 4 (11am), Youth 1 (2.30pm) and Youth 2 (6.30pm) finals will be decided on Saturday March 10th.
