Boxing Union of Ireland announce 2018 Award Winners
The Boxing Union of Ireland [BUI] have today announced the winners of their 2018 awards.
The national governing body have not run awards since 2014 but returned this afternoon and announced their five winners on social media.
Steven O’Rourke was awarded Trainer of the Year following a year in which his fighters tallied 20 wins and just one loss.
Fight of the Year was given to the epic lightweight clash between Ray Moylette and Christian Uruzquieta which beat out the BUI Celtic super featherweight title rematch between Stephen McAfee and Colin O’Donovan.
Prospect of the Year went to Naas lightweight Gary Cully who came in ahead of BUI Celtic light welter champion Victor Rabei.
A distinction was made between fighters plying their trade abroad and those boxing in Ireland. Katie Taylor won overseas Irish boxer of the year having unified the WBA and IBF lightweight titles, pipping new IBF super bantamweight champ TJ Doheny.
Finally, BUI Boxer of the Year went to Dublin middleweight Luke Keeler for his win over Conrad Cummings to claim the WBO European title. Tallaght super bantam Carl McDonald came in second following BUI Celtic and Irish title wins.
