Carl Frampton August opponent CONFIRMED

Carl Frampton’s August 10 opponent has been confirmed.

Promoters Top Rank today announced the former world champion at two weights will be back in action against Emmanuel Dominguez [26(18)-8-2] in Philadelphia on August 10 – live on ESPN+.

‘The Jackal’ clashes with Mexico’s Dominguez at the city’s Liacouras Center in a 10-round fight that will see him fight in the U.S for the first time in more than two years.

Belfast’s Frampton [26(15)-2(0)] , who was denied the IBF featherweight crown by Josh Warrington in his last fight back in December, is eager to secure a shot at WBO champion Oscar Valdez and the talk is a good win over Dominguez should ensure that.

Speaking about his first opponent since his Warrington reverse Frampton said,

“Dominguez is a tall, young, hungry featherweight, so I’ll need to be on my game.

“The premise of an Oscar Valdez fight is dangling in front of me, so I want to go out and show the world that I’ve still got what it takes to be a world champion.

“Winning is always the most important thing, but I want to do it in style. It’s great to be boxing Stateside again. And Philly, in particular, has so much boxing history.

“I’d like to thank MTK Global and Top Rank for giving me the opportunity. I won’t disappoint.”

Dominguez comes into the clash on the back of two knockout wins. Irish and British fight fans may recall the Mexican from his Sky Sports broadcast clash with Matchroom prospect Jordan Gill. The 25-year-old was stopped by the former Carl McDonald foe in March of this year.

Speaking on his TKO podcast last week Frampton has revealed a Mexican opponent was due to be announced. He revealed the team had gone the Mexican route as it was seen as good prep for a possible Valdez fight.

“We are looking at a Mexican opponent. There were a few mentioned. I can’t say names yet until it gets over the line, but the guy it looks like it’s going to be isn’t really that similar to Valdez, but similar enough,” Frampton explained. 

Frampton has Mexican previous. His first taste came back in 2012 when he out pointed Raul Hirales. Former WBA super flyweight world champion Hugo Fidel Cazares was stopped at the Odyssey two years later, while the late Alejandro Gonzalez Jr gave ‘The Jackal’ a scare on his American debut. Mega fights with Leo Santa Cruz played out back to back before Horacio Garcia came to Belfast for Frampton’s first fight with his new team.
