Cork managed ‘Rigo’ gets needed stoppage win

THERE was indirect world title success for Ireland on Saturday night as former Willie Casey foe Guillermo Rigondeuax retained his WBA and WBO super bantamweight titles in China.

The Cuban two time Olympic champion is managed by Cork Promoter and manager Gary Hyde.

‘Rigo’, who could be a possible opponent for Carl Frampton further down the line, stopped Sod Kokietgym 1:44 into a Macao hosted night of action.

The stoppage is exactly what Hyde would have wanted from his man. Despite the fact the Cuban is deemed one of the greatest amateurs of all time, is a double world champ despite being only 14 fights into his pro career and is currently ranked in the pound for pound top 10, he has received criticism from promoter Bob Arum and indeed HBO.

They and some fight fans want to see a more offensive approach from the super talented counter puncher. So they first round stoppage in China seems the perfect result for the much avoided fighter and in turn his Irish manger Hyde.
