Weekend Amateur Boxing Round-Up


While most eyes were on the biggest Irish pro show of the year, it was an exceedingly busy weekend for amateur boxing on the island.

The Ulster Elite Senior Championships semi-finals concluded while the preliminary rounds of the Irish Senior (Intermediate) Championships began.

In addition, Irish boxers were in action overseas at Elite Senior level at the prestigious Tammer multi-nations in Finland while the women’s Youth team got underway at the World Championships in Russia.

In Guwahati yesterday, Ireland’s opening boxer in action was defeated.

Flyweight Shauna Blaney, younger sister of BUI Celtic champion Chris, was defeated in the Round of 32 by Russian European silver medalist Ekaterina Molchanova.

In Finland Ireland walked away with eight medals – one for each member of the team.

Portlaoise middleweight claimed another multi-nations gold as he continues his flawless start to pro life as an adult boxer.

Finals day yesterday though saw four Irish boxers have to settle for silver – with Dean Gardiner being edged on a split, Kieran Molloy suffering another fight-ending cut, and Dubliners Tony Browne and George Bates also being beat. Also on the podiums were bronze medalists Wayne Kell, Myles Casey, and Kirill Afanasev.
