Victor Rabei had a debut to remember in Dublin tonight.

The Moldovan-born Dublin light welterweight was thrown in at the deep end on his pro debut, being pitted against tough Englishman Chris Adaway, but emerged with a hugely credible win over a noted upsetter.

The first ever debutant to take on Adaway, Rabei marked himself out as one to watch following a points win on the Red Corner ‘For Honour and Pride’ card at the National Stadium, where he showed some real quality shots and impressive workrate.

Rabei began quickly, whipping in a wide range of shots, especially the left hook to the body, and showing good movement early on, as Adaway looked to work off the jab.

‘The Chisinau Cyclone’ almost sent his large and loud support into pandemonium as he stunned Adaway early in the second. The Englishman rallied, but was struggling to deal with the workrate of Rabei.

The St Michael’s Inchicore fighter slowed somewhat in the third, but was still landing all the shots of note.

Adaway looked to jump home fighter in the fourth and final round, but Rabei would respond well with the left hook to the body continuing to work wonders. Adaway to his credit though continued to push the tired youngster throughout and proving a genuine test.

Going to the cards, Rabei was awarded a hugely impressive 39:37 points win by referee David Irvine.

The first victory sees Rabei start off his professional ledger at 1(0)-0, while the game but outclassed Adaway drops down to 7(1)-32(5)-4.
