Ormond on the up

3 January 2011 – Jonny Stapleton

Clondalkin puncher Steven Ormond finished off the year with a bang, making the Knock Out Of The Year top ten on Sky Sports.

The former St Matthews amateur finished sixth in the knock out poll after his sensational last round stoppage of Frenchman Sebastien Cornu on the undercard of Ricky Burns first World title defence in December.

The Frank Warren promoted fighter will now be looking to build on the success of last year and finally fulfil his boxing potential.

The former New York based lightweight, who was at one stage tipped to fill the void left by Bernard Dunnes retirement, is hoping to become the first Dubliner of the new century to win a Commonwealth belt and is on course for a title tilt in 2011.

Ormond who is the proud owner of an unbeaten seven fight record is on the cusp of a shot at Commonwealth super-featherweight champion Liam Walsh. The 27 year old claims Warren has told him if he does the business in the ring the promoter will do his job outside the squared circle and secure title challenges.

There are also rumours Ormond could top a Frank Warren promoted Dublin bill in February, a bill which near by neighbour Ian Tims as well as Cork’s Spike O’Sullivan would most certainly appear on.

The Rock is promising to be solid in 2011. I am really looking forward to 2011. It will be a busy year for me and I am planning to collect some titles before the year is out.
